Here's a list of what is coming up in the world of sci-fi/fantasy cinema. Most of these titles will be reviewed here, although I may skip a few of the lesser titles. Click here for my top 10 most anticipated releases.

Repo Men |
Mar 19 2010 |
A sort-of sequel to the '80's Emilio Estevez film Repo Man, this incarnation stars Jude Law and Forest Whitaker. Repo Man, Repo Men, and the recent Repo! The Genetic Opera all have something to do with some guys who repossess body organs when the buyers can't pay back their loans. Repo Men appears to have the stylistic edge on its brothers though and may end up being one of the most convincing sci-fi worlds of the year. |

How to Train Your Dragon |
Mar 26 2010 |
Not to jump to conclusions or anything, but this looks like another animated feature that uses the 3D effect as a replacement for plot and character. The trailer brings back memories of Dragonheart and Sean Connery's wonderful voice. However, even though Dragonheart was a pretty simple movie in the first place, How to Train Your Dragon looks like a dumbed-down version. We'll see for sure on March 26. |

Hot Tub Time Machine |
Mar 26 2010 |
Hot Tub Time Machine looks to be 2010's one hope for a good sci-fi comedy. Not that there's much science fiction to it besides a quick setup for a bunch of improvisation surrounding contemporary dudes being stuck in the 80's. The trailer certainly tries hard to bring to mind last year's hit, The Hangover. Whether it can reach that level of mass appeal remains to be seen. |

Clash of the Titans |
Apr 2 2010 |
This remake of the 1981 film by the same name looks likely to be as big and loud as a Transformers film. Hopefully it is a lot of fun as well. Titans marks the 3rd franchise in less than a year which is being handed over to the previously unknown Sam Worthington (after Terminator and Avatar). Backing him up are Liam Neeson as Zeus and Ralph Fiennes as Hades. Gemma Arterton plays the requisite love interest, a role she will reprise a couple of months later in Prince of Persia. |

After.Life |
Apr 9 2010 |
Is Christina Ricci dead or isn't she? Is Liam Neeson evil or isn't he? Is Justin Long the token boyfriend or not? These are the burning questions that linger after watching the trailer for After.Life. What may be a conventional thriller could be elevated by a unique style and solid performances. |

Nightmare on Elm Street, A |
Apr 30 2010 |
It seems like blasphemy to propose a Nightmare on Elm Street movie without Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. The producers of this series reboot bailed themselves out by nabbing Jackie Earle Haley to play the scarred killer. Even for those who didn't care for Watchmen, Haley was the one bright spot as Rorschach. But regardless of who is playing him, can Krueger recapture audience's imaginations in an era of horror focused less on iconic killers and more on disturbing torture and moral uncertainty? |

Cross, The |
May 1 2010 |
Not many details have been released about this film from the director of Gattaca, leading me to believe that it will not meet its scheduled May 1 release date. From what little we know, "the cross" of the title refers to crossing a border of some sort. The film stars Orlando Bloom, Vincent Cassel, and Olga Kurylenko. |

Iron Man 2 |
May 7 2010 |
After the surprise success of Iron Man, the sequel is poised to be a mega-hit. Gone from the cast due to a contract dispute is Terrence Howard, but taking his place is the excellent Don Cheadle. Also joining the ensemble are Mickey Rourke as Whiplash, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer, and Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow. The studio is taking no chances at upsetting the formula that made the first film a blockbuster, bringing back Jon Favreau behind the camera. Iron Man 2 hits theaters on May 7, 2010. |

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time |
May 28 2010 |
Adapting a movie from a video game might seem like a bad idea, but then again so did adapting a movie from a theme park ride. Unfortunately, Prince of Persia looks a bit generic, kind of like Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp. Jake Gyllenhaal has heftier acting chops than Orlando Bloom thankfully, but can he do action hero? His costar Gemma Arterton can sure do love interest, and Ben Kingsley should make for an entertaining villain, but this film is still a big summer question mark. |

Jonah Hex |
Jun 18 2010 |
Don't worry--despite the absence of a Transformers film, this summer will still give you your Megan Fox fix. Here she plays opposite Josh Brolin in a supernatural western comic book adaptation. Brolin is Jonah Hex, a bounty hunter set on stopping some sort of Confederate zombie plot. Not being familiar with the comic book, I have little idea what to expect, but this particular genre-mash is intriguing. |

Twilight Saga: Eclipse |
Jun 30 2010 |
This teen-oriented vampire series has quickly become both the most loved and hated fantasy series of our time. Girls rush to the theater opening day to see their favorite werewolf or vampire take off his shirt. Straight men have to hide their identity if they are dragged to see the film. And the frenzy isn't over. This summer brings Eclipse, with Breaking Dawn to begin filming later this year (and likely to be broken into two films). |

Last Airbender, The |
Jul 2 2010 |
M. Night Shyamalan has alienated just about all the fans he accrued due to The Sixth Sense after the wretched trio of The Village, Lady in the Water, and The Happening. Maybe working as the hired help on someone else's property will do him good. The Last Airbender is based on the Avatar cartoon series (having ditched the Avatar title for obvious reasons). The teaser gives us a tantalizing glimpse of an epic battle. I just hope there's no twist ending. |

Predators |
Jul 7 2010 |
From the title I gather that this film wants to be to Predator as Aliens was to Alien. Of course there has already been a Predator 2, and an Alien Vs. Predator, and a sequel to that, and a video game, and so on. So maybe Predators will be more of a series reboot than just a sequel. Robert Rodriguez's name being attached generates some excitement, but he is only a producer. The trailers will likely make or break this one. |

Sorcerer's Apprentice, The |
Jul 16 2010 |
This teen fantasy thing is getting tiresome. The Sorcerer's Apprentice has a few things going for it, but will that be enough to separate it from the plethora of similar titles? The urban setting gives it more of a dark, Hellboy-sort of feel. Jay Baruchel is a great choice for the protagonist of this sort of film, even if he is in his upper 20's. He still does the teen dork thing really well. Nicholas Cage, Monica Bellucci, and Alfred Molina round out the cast nicely. Still, I can't shake that feeling I get from Cirque du Freak and Percy Jackson & The Olympians that we've seen this all before. |

Inception |
Jul 16 2010 |
Inception is quickly shooting to the top of everyone's list of most anticipated 2010 films. That is despite the fact that no one really knows anything about it. The trailer is compelling, but offers few hints about the plot. What everyone wants to know is--what was a good enough idea to tear Christopher Nolan away from making the next Batman film? |
