Resident Evil: Afterlife

Sep 10 2010

While I'm happy that Milla Jovovich keeps drawing a paycheck from this franchise, it has not managed to keep my interest through three films. This is the first installment since the original Resident Evil which is directed by Paul W.S. Anderson who is one of my favorite bad movie directors, so maybe that will mean good things for the fourth film.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Sep 24 2010

Zack Snyder turns his attention from stylized ultra-violence towards kid-friendly animated fare in Legend of the Guardians, based on the Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series. Guardians will hit theaters in 3D this September.

Let Me In

Why why why why why? This ranks up there with Vanilla Sky for the most unnecessary remake of all time. Let the Right One In is one of the best films of the last few years, and its European tone and pacing is part of what makes it work so well. I dread to think of what Cloverfield director Matt Reeves will do to Americanize it. I haven't yet decided whether I will boycott this one out of principle or attempt to give it a chance.

5

Monsters

Oct 29 2010

Few details are escaping regarding this alien invasion/border-crossing film. No trailer will be available until the debut at SXSW, but the one image that has been released is interesting to say the least.

4

Megamind

Nov 5 2010

Following in the footsteps of The Incredibles, Megamind promises to be a "satirical take on superhero movies." The film focuses on a villain who loses his sense of identity after killing his nemesis. Megamind may be doomed to obscurity in the shadow of Despicable Me, which comes out earlier in 2010. The former does boast a big-name cast including Brad Pitt, Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, and Tina Fey.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I

Nov 19 2010

The final Harry Potter chapter begins in this first part of the adaptation of the final novel in the series. In line with the current trend, Deathly Hallows will be presented in 3D.

Tron Legacy

Dec 17 2010

December 2010, like December 2009, is home to a big-time 3D sci-fi film. This year it's Tron Legacy. Promising to "use 3D like The Wizard of Oz used color," this reboot of the 1982 film will be eagerly anticipated throughout 2010.

4

Gulliver's Travels

Dec 22 2010

A contemporary comedic take on the classic adventure story, Gulliver's Travels stars Jack Black as the title character. A strong supporting cast includes Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Amanda Peet, and Billy Connolly, but this film will likely live or die by its screenplay which could easily veer into Land of the Lost-level stupidity if the writers are not careful.

4

Battle: Los Angeles

Feb 18 2011

Aliens are invading Los Angeles! Or is it Aliens in Los Angeles? Either way, should be fun. Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, and Bridget Moynahan join the team to fight off the invaders.

7

Adjustment Bureau, The

Mar 4 2011

A Philip K. Dick adaptation starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Should be the most anticipated film of the summer, right? Details are scarce thus far, but The Adjustment Bureau has been touted as a sort of sci-fi Bourne movie.

8

Priest

Mar 4 2011

Paul Bettany plays a vampire-hunting priest. It doesn't sound promising, but I'll wait for a trailer before I speculate any further. Priest is the second 2010 film from director Scott Stewart after January's Legion.

2

Beastly

See video
Mar 18 2011

A modern reinterpretation of The Beauty and the Beast targeted at the Disney Channel crowd (see cast list including Vanessa Hudgens and Mary-Kate Olsen).

1

Sucker Punch

Mar 25 2011

Now this seems a little more Zack Snyder's speed. After being overwhelmed by the task of adapting Watchmen, Snyder turns to a movie being described as "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns." Get ready for plenty of Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, and Jena Malone in slow motion.

6

Thor

May 6 2011

Marvel scored a coup by nabbing Shakespearean thespian/director Kenneth Branagh to direct Thor. But can he do action, or will this be another Ang Lee debacle? Chris Hemsworth (Kirk's dad in Star Trek) will play the title character and will be joined by Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Stellan Skarsgård.
