About

Sci-fi Link is a movie review site with some extra features. My primary goal is to help you find science fiction movies which you haven't seen but will probably like based on comprehensive classification. That classification has several different facets.

  • Genre - the sub-genre(s) of science fiction that the given work fits best into.
  • Setting - the locales in which the work takes place.
  • Content - what makes it sci-fi, the technology and tropes in the work.
  • Themes - The meaning of the work, what ideas and themes are present.
  • Other information also available for cross-referencing includes the director, release year, mpaa rating, and star rating.

One question that may arise as you peruse the database here is, how do I define "sci-fi?" This is a topic for an essay at some point. For the most part, I find the argument over differentiating between "science fiction", "sci-fi", or "SF" rather pointless. For this site, I define sci-fi very generally under the category of speculative fiction. I will typically not focus on genre efforts that fit neatly into horror or fantasy, but anything that is somewhat genre-bending could certainly be reviewed here.

This site is not a wiki (although it will become more interactive), but I do encourage interaction in the form of comments. If you see a theme that doesn't fit a movie, or one that should be mentioned, let me know! I will either fix it or let you know why I decide to keep it the same. Likewise if you notice a certain film or show that is not in the database but should be.
